Bay 4 Industrial Facility // North Kingstown, RI Size: 130,000 sf // Architect: Ware Malcomb General Dynamics Electric Boat
The Bay 4 Building is approximately 150,000 sf with two freight elevators, four overhead cranes (two with a combined lift capability of 120 tons and two with a combined lift capability of 30 tons), as well as other manufacturing equipment. The building was designed for the construction of deck modules to house command and combat control computers aboard the U.S. Navy’s Virginia class nuclear submarines and housed all manner of workers for the company, including welders, pipefitters, electricians and shiplifters. Dimeo approached the improvement of the underlying soils to accept the high loads imposed by the thick slab in conjunction with the static weight from the transporter with submarine sections. The existing soils alone would allow the slab to settle more than allowed. Therefore, Rammed Aggregate Piers were used to “stiffen” the soils whereby increasing the bearing capacity and ultimately decreasing the anticipated settlement to within acceptable numbers.

Port & Cement Distribution Facility // Providence, RI Size: 60,000 sf // Architect: Lehigh Valley Technical Associates Glen Falls Lehigh Cement
This project involved an aggressive thirteen-month schedule to construct a cement distribution facility at the Port of Providence. The 44,000 ton storage facility was encased in a 140 ft-dia, 112 ft. tall, polyester-core, PVC-coated fabric dome that will store Turkish-manufactured cement. This is the first time such a dome has been married to the floor system. The dome was inflated using fans and then sprayed with a two-inch thick layer of polyurethane insulation on the inside for rigidity, and then it is overlapped with rebar and shotcrete.
