Dimeo Construction Company completed the new 186,258 sf Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering for the University of Rhode Island, College of Engineering. The new “H”-shaped facility, which includes a walk-out lower level, 6-story bridge structure and 2 - 4 story office wings, replaces five separate buildings built in the 1950 and 60’s. The first floor, located on the Quad level, has a large south-facing commons and computer lab, and features a clear span commons area with café, with no columns, as part of the bridge structure. The first floor also features a combination of instructional labs and interactive classrooms opening up to student interaction spaces. The upper floors are comprised of flexible modular labs near the faculty offices and graduate student workstations. An additional aspect of the project involved the 57,500 sf renovation of Bliss Hall. The original building was built in 1926 and housed the entire school of engineering. The Bliss Hall project started with demolition of the 2-story addition at the back of the building and the erection of a modern metal panel 4-story addition, as well as installing all new MEP and gutting the existing 5-story building. This adjacency helps to meet the demands of the engineering school and provides a research environment that encourages and supports collaboration and interaction.
