Experience Profile

New Construction // Stamford, CT Size: 400,000 sf // Architect: The S/L/A/M Collaborative, Amenta Emma Westhill High School

The new Westhill High School delivers an energy-efficient facility that improves traffic circulation, enhances the educational environment, and supports the surrounding community. Site features include two synthetic turf fields, a natural grass baseball field, a softball field, and tennis courts. The existing high school, occupied during construction, will be demolished upon completion of the new building.

New Construction // Cranston, RI Size: 85,000 sf // Architect: Fielding International Garden City Elementary School

Garden City Elementary School will comply with 21st-century learning needs and meet current educational program requirements for grades K-5. The new facility provides a variety of learning and community engagement spaces, including a cafeteria, gymnasium, and performance areas. Demolition of the existing +/- 33,000 sf building was followed by construction of a new 85,000 sf elementary school on the existing site with a maximum capacity of 575 students. Site improvements included student bus and parent drop-off areas, additional parking, new play structures, outdoor learning areas, and plantings. Gas and electrical services were upgraded with a new generator, and sub-surface and surface stormwater infiltration systems were incorporated to meet or exceed current sustainability and energy codes.

New Construction // Warwick, RI Size: 200,000 sf // Architect: SA Architects, JCJ Architecture Toll Gate High School

Toll Gate High School was designed to serve 1,170 students in a facility built around modern learning and community connection. The school includes classrooms, labs, learning studios, CTE workshops, and student commons, as well as a gymnasium, auditorium, dining commons, and media center. Key shared spaces were designed with the broader community in mind, creating opportunities for engagement beyond the school day.

New Construction // Warwick, RI Size: 206,000 sf // Architect: Saam Architecture Pilgrim High School

Pilgrim High School was designed to support 21st-century learning and reflect the District’s goals for an equitable, flexible, and community-centered facility. Classrooms are organized within non departmentalized learning communities, encouraging cross-curricular collaboration by integrating Career and Technical Education, vocational and technical programs, health, arts, and core academics. Large common spaces, including a double-height dining and learning commons, serve as the building’s central spine, connecting students across activities and providing clear wayfinding throughout. Simplified and standardized materials support long-term sustainability and reduce maintenance costs.

New Construction // Providence, RI Size: 78,000 sf // Architect: StudioJAED Harry Kizirian Elementary School

Kizirian PK-8 School is a new, purpose-built facility replacing the former elementary school on the same grounds. The building is designed to serve approximately 858 students across pre kindergarten through eighth grade, with three classrooms per grade. Accessible and inclusive by design, the facility includes separate bathrooms and learning areas for the youngest and oldest students, as well as updated technology and safety features throughout.

Early Childhood Building // Providence, RI Size: 27,000 sf // Architect: SA Architects Meeting Street School

The two-story 27,000 +/- sf educational and administrative building sits on the pad north of the existing school and operational bus lane. This facility comprises six classrooms ranging from infants to preschool level, offices, and additional training/conference room spaces for Meeting Street faculty. The project also involved the renovation of the existing Early Childhood Center and Early Intervention space, approximately 9,000 sf on two different levels of the existing building, once the new Early Childhood Building is completed.

New Construction // Worcester, MA Size: 451,858 sf // Architect: LPA|A Doherty Memorial High School

Doherty Memorial is a 420,000+ sf building that serves grades 9-12, with an increased enrollment of 1670 students, and features a theater, an 800+ seat auditorium, and an 18,000 sf gymnasium. Featured programs at the high school include vocational technical courses such as programming and web development, construction craft laborer, and an Advanced Academy in both Biotechnology and Special Education. These programs are supported by additional STEM makerspaces, computer science classrooms, science labs, and Chapter 74 vocational spaces. The project followed the Green Worcester Plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions from city operations by 2050. Sustainable construction included 1,776 high-efficiency rooftop Vortex solar panels to create energy savings.

New Construction, Occupied Campus // Duxbury, MA Size: 322,000 sf // Architect: Mount Vernon Group Architects Duxbury Middle - High School

The MSBA-funded co-located Middle and High School is part of the 65+ acre St. George Street campus and replaces both the existing Duxbury Middle and High Schools. The 322,000 sf, 1,700 student school includes a three-story High School wing that houses typical and specialized High School learning areas and High School administration; it also includes a three-story Middle School wing that houses Middle School administration and typical and specialized Middle School learning areas arranged in teams. This configuration allows for two teams per grade and one grade per floor, a spine concourse, and the one-, two-, and three-story “core plus” wing, which houses shared spaces for athletics, the arts, the cafeteria, and the media center. BIM was used to spatially coordinate MEP/FP systems to improve installation and reduce rework.

Fine Arts Center Expansion and Renovation // Newport, RI Size: 42,230 sf // Architect: Sasaki Associates, Inc. St. George’s School

This 42,230 sf project was designed to create a campus center in a space that originally housed the school gymnasium and locker facilities. The renovated and expanded building offers a formal exhibit gallery, a theater, dressing rooms, classrooms for drawing, painting, graphic arts, and photography, music rooms, a shop for welding, and woodworking.

Fuller Athletic Center // Middlebury, CT Size: 34,000 sf // Architect: Graham Gund Architects Westover School

The 34,000 sf Fuller Athletic Center is a welcome and much-needed addition to the beautiful campus of Westover School, an independent college-preparatory and boarding day school for young women in grades nine through twelve. The center houses a gymnasium, a fitness center, a squash pavilion, a multi-purpose room, offices for the Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer, a locker room for students and faculty, a visiting team room, and equipment storage areas.

Jonathan E. Reed Elementary/Middle School // Waterbury, CT Size: 76,000 sf // Architect: Svigals + Partners, LLP Waterbury Schools

Jonathan Reed Elementary was built in memory of Reverend Jonathan E Reed, and is the first school in Waterbury named after an African American. This $31.5 million, 76,000 sf elementary/ middle school contains a two-story classroom wing with two classrooms per grade, special education rooms, art & science classrooms, and home resource rooms. The classroom wing also has a new media center and support space for school staff. The two-story open ceiling “cafetorium”, full-size gym, and athletic support spaces are located in an adjacent wing. Although not seeking LEED certification, the school achieved LEED Silver status. The completion of this project had a significant social and economic impact on the City of Waterbury, instilling pride and excitement in the surrounding community.

New Construction // Grafton, MA Size: 186,000 sf // Architect: SMMA Grafton High School

The new Grafton High School is located on the existing 46-acre high school site, so great care and planning took place to segregate the work site from the occupied campus. The new 186,000-square-foot Grafton High School serves 900 students and can accommodate up to 1,200. The school provides advanced educational spaces developed around a forward-thinking philosophy and a flexible cluster (pod) plan. These pods are designed and organized to reinforce the tenets of 21st-century career skills: collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving.

New Construction, Occupied Site // Newton, MA Size: 400,000 sf // Architect: Dore & Whittier Architects Newton North High School

Phase One of this MSBA-funded facility consisted of the construction of a two-story, academic/ athletic building and four-story interconnected classroom/academic wings. The building contains a theater, indoor swimming pool, an exhibition gymnasium, playing fields, and athletic support facilities; in addition, vocational educational spaces, such as automotive, carpentry, electrical, graphics/printing, and culinary arts facilities, were included, affording Newton’s students with a broad range of educational opportunities. Parking and vehicle circulation, site utilities, landscaping, and associated site improvements completed the scope requirements. The new school has been certified as a LEED Gold facility, the City’s first municipal building to be LEED certified.

New Construction // Tolland, CT Size: 230,000 sf // Architect: Moser/Pilon/Nelson Tolland High School

The $46 million, 230,000 sf, 2-story senior high school houses 1,300 students and includes a 900 seat auditorium, cafeteria, gymnasium, and almost 60 classrooms, including music classrooms with special acoustical finishes, science classrooms, computer labs, specialty labs, and a new 10,000 sf library/media center. The school was built on a 45-acre parcel that required extensive site development for the school, roadways, parking, and multiple playing fields, including softball, baseball, track, football, soccer, practice fields, and tennis courts. This project was completed on schedule and slightly under budget.

New Construction // Madison, CT Size: 207,000 sf // Architect: JCJ Architecture. Daniel Hand High School

This 207,000 sf high school, constructed for the Town of Madison, CT, offers classrooms, administrative space, a media center, a gymnasium, and a cafeteria. The school consists of 2 separate buildings connected by an enclosed student commons bridge. The facility was constructed in brick masonry with precast accents and a glass third story. Additionally, the site features a bus drop-off area between the 2 buildings, separating student/ staff parking from parent/visitor drop-off areas.

Addition // Providence, RI Size: 18,260 sf // Architect: Rhinebeck Architecture & Planning PC Moses Brown School

The Ross House is a 2-story, steel-framed structure with historical details to match the existing building. The new structure houses science, computer, and language classrooms. Site work for the addition encompassed utilities, including an emergency generator, transformer, fire protection, and domestic water, drainage, and sewer systems. Exposed aggregate walkways, new site lighting, and landscaping around the addition rounded out site improvements.

Renovations and Additions // Centerbook, CT Size: 55,000 sf // Architect: Arbonies King Vlock Essex Elementary School

The project involved renovations and an addition to an existing 76,000 sf, 50-year-old elementary school. Work included renovations to classrooms and administrative offices, as well as the creation of a new bus drop-off area and entrance on the east side of the building. The original project was modified to include a 14,000 sf eight-classroom addition after it was discovered that a septic issue would have driven up the cost of simply expanding the classrooms. The addition was built within the voter-approved budget and provided “swing space” into which students were moved during work on classrooms in other areas of the building.
