The restoration of 43 Hillhouse included architectural improvements such as new bedrooms, bathrooms, catering kitchens, walls, ceilings, floors, a back-of-house stairway, and an elevator. Existing surfaces and elements, such as the main staircase, numerous wood floors, and exterior walls, were refinished. New mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems were also installed. Sitework included a new handicap ramp, regrading of the existing bluestone walkway, and landscaping/plantings. Built in 1871 and becoming the Yale president’s official residence in 1937, the Georgian Revival style building features works of art on display from the Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art collections.
