Dimeo Construction Company has begun construction of the University’s new STEM Research Center, as part of the Northwest Science Quad District. The Science 1 building is approximately 192,000 sf and will consist of laboratory, research, teaching, and associated office and support spaces with some unique features, including a clean room, a series of material science-specific core labs, and a 300-seat auditorium. The building is located on a 14 acre site with approximately 1,100 ft of new underground utility tunnel connecting to 520 ft of existing tunnel, with new utilities being installed in front of the building footprint. The utility tunnel will be constructed in multiple phases, with the first excavation having started in August 2020, and the final section scheduled to be backfilled in April of 2021. Maintaining this schedule is critical as the systems within the tunnel feed Science 1 and must be complete for the building system startup. Once completed, it will connect UCONN’s Central Utility Plant to their Supplemental Utility Plant, from which the Science 1 building’s utilities will be fed.
